Out with the old in with the NEW
Love that pink.
We are remodeling our Living room, kitchen, and two bathrooms finally. Our 1963 bathrooms and kitchen really need a face-lift. The kitchen looks like an adult version of what you might imagine would be in Barbie’s and Ken’s house. Pink counter tops with gold flicks, pink back splash that matches the counter top, pink floor, and when we moved in there was a pink stove and dishwasher, but these are long gone. Now I know what you are thinking how retro, how could you ever change that, “how retro,” for me has passed its welcome and getting down on my hands and knees to reach things in the back of the cupboard has become really old. This color theme is also known as Lady Bird, the first lady from 1963 – 1969.
It has been a journey, finding contractors, interviewing them, and making decisions. We have decided on a contractor. Getting under way took longer than we expected, but of course there are a lot of details that need to be worked out. While we were waiting there is much to do; pick out bath fixtures, toilet, and kitchen appliances. For the matching of the colors and textures we decided to hire an interior designer. After interviewer the candidates, we landed on one we like. So, she is helping us with flooring, cabinets, counter tops, and trim choices for the kitchen, Living room and baths. I feel fortunate to be retired so I can actually enjoy the process and have time to go out and look at our design choices.
Getting ready for the actual demo was a bit exhausting. It gave us an opportunity to purge some of our items by selling them on Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace, making local donations or just helping them out to the garbage. Things kept surfacing we never knew we had, and things we knew we had but never used. We still have a lot of belongings we could not part with during this initial purging round. I have a feeling when everything starts to come out of their boxes, there will be more donations and selling. My husband has really gotten on the selling bandwagon. It is keeping him entertained as well as helping us keeping items out of our dumps.
We decided to stay in the house during the construction. So, we have one bedroom as our make shift kitchen and one bedroom as the living room, entertainment and computer center. No kitchen makes it a little like camping in our house. You have heard of car camping, well this is house camping. We have access to microwave, toaster oven, and crockpot. I wonder what interesting meals will be created here? We did tell the contractor we did need a working toilet and shower all the time, so he is doing some work arounds for us. So far all seems to be going well.
Stayed tuned for future updates in future blogs because the demo has started.
Looking the same direction as the first picture. As you can see there are naked studs in my kitchen, oh my.
