Discovery in the kitchen has always been a passion of mine. My love of making food started with baking cookies when I was 8, mostly for my family (I have two older brothers, so the cookies never stuck around long). My name, Martha GoodCookie, was given to me by my friend and sister-in-law, Annette. It is unusual for me to follow a recipe as it is written, so when people ask for my recipes, I must stop and try to remember what I did differently “this time.” My kids make jokes about my inability to follow a recipe. Over the years, I have had requests for my recipes, so here is my way of sharing them with you.
I have been thinking for a long time about starting a blog to share my recipes. Many of my recipes will be family ones, and some were developed out of necessity to have foods without dairy, gluten, egg, grain, and legumes for myself. And of course, some recipes are just good old, fully loaded, yummy treats.
Now that I am retired, I have a bit more time. So that’s how this blog really got started. Recently, I have been working on helping those with food intolerances, myself included. We like to eat yummy things too, without ending up with a stomachache. Other times, I just want to create healthy food for all. With increasing diabetes and obesity, we all need to enjoy healthy food most of the time with the occasional treat.
I graduated with a mechanical engineering degree in 1983, back when there were 4% women in all engineering disciplines at my university. What I found in the working world was this number was much, much less. I am now a retired mechanical engineer, I worked for 30+ years in industry. At work, I put my baking skills to work, some called it refreshment and others called it a bribe, in the end the work on done.
I think it is my problem-solving ability that I have as a mechanical engineer that makes me want to experiment with food and find the solution to making creative, unusual, and exceptional food. Now, I must admit, sometimes things just don’t look quite right, but rarely do they taste bad.
My favorite food when I was growing up was peanut butter. I would eat it by the spoonful and never got tired of having it in my school lunch. Most of the time it was just peanut butter, but sometimes – if I had them – I would add potato chips to my sandwiches (peanut butter and potato chip sandwich).
I love to go on adventures, so I will be sharing my recent, past, and future planned adventures. My favorite adventures are into the great outdoors.
I grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota; and yes, there is snow here part of the winter. I like the outdoors, so in the winter I enjoy cross-country skiing and taking walks. In the summer, I am a biker, hiker, and rock climber. I live with my husband, and my adult kids live nearby.
Now is the time to share.
